“Take advantage of the different resources and programs that are available at Chabot College.”

Shaneel grew up in Hayward and didn’t know what to major in when he enrolled at Chabot College. He is grateful to his former Chabot College counselor, the late Joe Kuwabarra, for making an impact on his life. During his first year at Chabot College, Shaneel struggled academically, and Joe understood the unique challenges Asian American students face as first generation college students. Shaneel’s experience with Joe motivated him to pursue sociology. To this day, Shaneel continues to feel Joe’s positive energy.

After Chabot College, Shaneel transferred to CSU East Bay and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice and Corrections. For several years, Shaneel served as a corrections officer for San Mateo County, where he engaged with inmates supporting their education. He saw the value of education and how education opens doors for opportunities

Recognizing his passion for education and teaching, Shaneel received his Master’s degree in Sociology from New Mexico State University. Since 2016, Shaneel has taught Sociology classes at Las Positas College, Evergreen Valley College, and San Jose City College. As of this interview, Shaneel is finishing up his Doctorate in Education.

Shaneel’s advice to current students: Take advantage of the different resources and programs that are available at Chabot College. Take time to build relationships with your college professors.
